News
  • One Day Without Shoes: On Tuesday, April 10th, our class will be participating in One Day Without Shoes, a national event to raise awareness of the millions of people across the world who live their lives without shoes. Students are encouraged to wear flip-flops or other footwear that can be easily removed on this day. We will be screening the documentary For Tomorrow: The TOMS Shoes Story in the afternoon and parents/guardians are invited to attend.   • Middle School Play: On Wednesday, April 4th at 6:30pm the Middle School will present "The Wizard of Oz" with a steampunk twist at the Sedona Public Library. Admission is $5.00 per person.
  • Supplies Needed for Woodworking Elective: Steve Donovan has volunteered to run a woodworking elective for the remainder of the school year and is need of the following supplies:
        • tools (screwdrivers, saws, hammers, etc.)
        • wood
        • nails
        • screws
  • Chaperones for End of Year Trips: The 4th and 5th Years will be taking a number of trips on the last week of school (May 21st-25th) while the 6th Years are in the Grand Canyon. If you would like to chaperone any of these trips, please let us know. More information to come.
  • 6th Year Hikes: Bill will be taking all 6th Years on the following hikes to prepare them for the Grand Canyon. If you would like to drive and/or chaperone any of the hikes, please contact us.
        • Chimney Rock: Friday, March 30th from 12:30-3:00pm
        • Devil's Bridge: Friday April 13th from 12:00-3:00pm
        • Bell Rock/Court House Butte: Friday, April 20th from 12:00-3:00pm
        • West Fork: Friday, April 27th from 11:00am-3:00pm
        • Bear Mountain: Friday, May 4th from 9:00am-3:00pm
        • Badger Springs: Friday, May 11th from 9:00am-3:00pm
  • Homework: Beginning Friday, February 24th we will be sending home weekly homework packets with each student according to the following schedule:
        • Math packet assigned Friday 2/24, due Friday 3/2
        • Language Arts packet assigned Friday 3/2, due Friday 3/9
        • Writing packet assigned Monday 3/12, due Friday 3/23
        • Math packet assigned Friday 3/23, due Friday 3/30
        • Language Arts packet assigned Friday 3/30, due Thursday 4/5
        • Writing packet assigned Thursday 4/5, due Friday 4/13
Reminders
    • Intra-Personal Intelligence Course: Bridget Van Block will continue working with the 6th year students each Tuesday afternoon beginning March 20th and ending April 17th. 
    • AIMS: This year our school is scheduled to take AIMS beginning Tuesday, April 17th and continuing until Friday, April 20th.
    • Class Plays: Save the date! UE class plays will take place Thursday, May 10th from 5:30-7:30pm.
    • We would like to encourage students and/or their parents to first speak with their Advising Teacher should personal or academic issues arise. If necessary, the issue will then be taken to Marsha as Principal Educator and further action taken if needed.
    • We do not have a microwave available for students to heat up their lunch at school
    • Please send a reusable water bottle to school with your student to keep in their cubby
    • Students are encouraged to bring a snack to school to eat before lunch 

    Volunteer Opportunities
        50 Parent/Guardian Volunteer Hours per year are required for each SCS student unless other arrangements are made with the Principal Educator. Below are the current volunteer opportunities for the UE classroom. Be sure to log your hours in the main office!

    • Parent Help Needed: We are looking for parent volunteers to help out with various tasks (tutoring students, grading, roving) within our classroom Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 8:00-12:00 (or any increment of time between these hours). If you are interested, please contact us.
    • Classroom Library Organization: We need help organizing our classroom library which includes ordering and coding our wide variety of novels.
    • Laminating/Hole Punching/Editing: If you are available to help us with these tasks during the school day, please let us know or drop by.

    • Girls Workshops: 
      • 1) Debra Beck, author of My Feet Aren't Ugly, will be running a girls workshop from 1:30-3:00pm  on Wednesday, March 28th. This workshop will be offered free of charge, though we are requesting a $10 donation per student to cover the cost of the book, My Feet Aren't Ugly, that each student will be provided with during the workshop. If you cannot pay this donation for any reason, please contact us and we will make sure your student is provided with a copy as we feel it is an essential tool for girls raise their self esteem.       • 2)  Proud to be Me, a fun girl's night created to foster positive self-expression, self-esteem, body image, and healthy friendships will take place on Wednesday, March 28th from 4:00-7:00pm.  Activities will include: movement, drama/theater, art, discussion, and dinner for a fee of $20 per student. LeAnn Woods previously taught in the Upper Elementary classroom at SCS.  She now lives in Boulder, Colorado, where she is currently pursuing a Graduate degree in Somatic Counseling Psychology.

    • End of 3rd Quarter: Today, Friday, March 9th is the end of the 3rd quarter and all overdue work must be turned in by this date. Report cards will be issued after Spring Break. Please email us or contact your student's advising teacher to request a conference.
    • Spring Break: School will be closed from Monday, March 12th - Friday, March 16th for Spring Break. Enjoy your time off!
    • Homework: Beginning Friday, February 24th we will be sending home weekly homework packets with each student according to the following schedule:
          • Math packet assigned Friday 2/24, due Friday 3/2
          • Language Arts packet assigned Friday 3/2, due Friday 3/9

      UE Newsletter 3/1/12

      News
      • Photos Wanted: Bill is beginning production of the 2011-2012 School Year Slideshow. If you have any digital photographs from this school year, please send them to bbsedonacharter@gmail.com.
      • Materials Needed: We are running low on certain classroom supplies and are requesting donations of the following:
            • Yarn
            • Construction Paper (all colors)
            • Posterboard (small and large)
            • Bleach-based Cleaning Supplies
      • Tip-A-Cop: Yesterday's Tip-A-Cop Fundraiser was a success! Special thanks to Kevin Ahern and the Sedona Police Department for helping us raise over $1,000 for the 6th Grade Grand Canyon Trip!
      • St. Patrick's Day Parade THIS SATURDAY: Sedona Charter School has always been a presence at this event. This year we have decided on Arizona's Centennial as our theme. The UE class will be decorating Marsha's van which will tow a trailer for the event. Students, parents, and guardians are encouraged to attend on foot or on bicycle. Please remember to dress up like a pioneer! The parade will begin at the Heritage Museum on Jordan Road Saturday, March 3rd and will run from 10:30am-12:00pm. Please arrive before 10:00am if you plan on accompanying our float.
      • End of 3rd Quarter: Friday, March 9th is the end of the 3rd quarter and all overdue work must be turned in by this date. Report cards will be issued after Spring Break.

          • "This course is designed to support students in exploring their inner world in a fun, hands on, and experiential way. They will learn about their feelings and where their feelings express themselves within their bodies. They will fine-tune their ability to listen more deeply and trust themselves and what their body is telling them. They will isolate and fine tune their senses and see how their senses help guide them and inform them and support them in their inner knowing. These life skills can serve the students throughout their lives, building a foundation to trust their inner guidance."
